Rock & Hard Place

~ Hard To Home Bengals ~

Several factors contribute to the infamous rescue Bengal, but one thing for certain, there are many of them hoping for a fresh start in life. If you already share your life with a used Bengal, chances are you have some insight into the need to ensure new Bengal kittens and their new homes/families are suitable for each other. Poor matches rarely last and good second homes can be hard to find. Should you feel you have what it takes to love and care for a Bengal waiting for an honest placement, it may be your opportunity. Actually, this is exactly where we initially came in contact with our first Bengals. Their interaction and communication strategies shaped the experience to an indispensable learning about Bengals.

Undesirable urine habits, challenging behavior and unanticipated allergic reaction are among the most usual reasons given for relationship breakdown between Bengals and their homes. While these behaviors are not necessarily common or specific to the Bengal, pre-purchase owner education may avert a potential crisis situation. Research is advised prior to acquiring any pet, but particularly one with unique or exotic qualities, such as a Bengal. Generally, problems are more effectively addressed before they are encountered, as opposed to after.

No secret, wild blood in the heritage of a Bengal cat remains a factor in their behavior. Their attraction to water is rarely limited to a source of fun and games. Similar to their ancestors, it is not uncommon for a Bengal to choose a wet or moist area for urination. Condensation, leaky pipes, snow boot trays, the shower, are just a few examples of water sources that may become attractive for the purpose of elimination. Even items that remotely resemble water, such as plastic bags, shiny metal surfaces or pillows may create a pattern for unwanted behavior. Steadfast litter training, timely reward, controlled  access, deterrents or removal of items may be necessary. Once behaviors start, it takes effort to change them.

Bengals are proven to have remarkable personality and temperament. They are also known to have attitude. Combination of their roots, intelligence, energy and instinct creates a very determined and self preserving creature. With trust in their own instincts, convincing them otherwise may be a task. Friend or foe is at their own discretion. Normally affectionate, yet not all are comfortable being held and will resist any attempt at force. Bengals are more likely to flee than fight, however, they are territorial and may challenge others perceived as intruding upon their space. Often, they are fearless of other animals, especially dogs.

Frequently, classified advertisements for the breed claim Bengals are hypoallergenic. In the same column you are bound to see other ads indicating allergies as the reason for a Bengal being in need of rehoming. In our experience, Bengals are not hypoallergenic. Whether or not someone has or will develop an allergy to them may simply be fate. Consider the allergy related risk factors carefully and wisely to avoid disappointment.

But the number one reason for people giving up their Bengal?  Disposable pets. Just about everything else is little more than a lame excuse. The convenience of dumping. Moving, having a baby, not working out with the dog, returning to school, not enough time and other lines, you name it, smack with ease of removal compared to effort for adjustment.

Occasionally, we have transient, homeless or other needy Bengals that require a suitable placement. Most will do well in a loving home with individualized special care and an environment that supports their needs. Feel welcome to apply.
